Episode 8 recap: Yet another demonic cultivator has approached Yun Chao Yan.
After hearing about Ren Shi Que's past, Yun Chao Yan felt that Ren Shi Que was also quite pitiful. However, she believed that Kui Ji must have had unavoidable difficulties, as she noticed that Kui Ji's gaze towards Ren Shi Que was filled with a mother's love for her child. She shared this observation with Ren Shi Que, but unexpectedly, her words touched Ren Shi Que's painful memories, causing him to angrily dismiss her.
Drunk and wandering the streets alone, Yun Chao Yan mistook the approaching Ren Shi Que for Kui Ji, loudly calling for Kui Ji to come to her so she could clarify the situation and prevent Ren Shi Que from feeling saddened further.
Ren Shi Que had previously heard Yun Chao Yan say that she never dared to drink alcohol, as the demonic cultivators would take advantage of her weakness to possess her. Now, seeing Yun Chao Yan so thoughtfully concerned for him, Ren Shi Que felt touched. As he went to help Yun Chao Yan, she stumbled and fell into his embrace, clinging tightly to him. This warm embrace stirred an unusual feeling within Ren Shi Que.
Ren Shi Que used his spiritual powers to sober up Yun Chao Yan, then told her he had a new task for her - to become his personal attendant. Delighted, Yun Chao Yan happily shared this good news with Grandma Long, who was also pleased that Yun Chao Yan and Xie Gui Chen had become colleagues.
Yun Chao Yan had thought that with her new position as an imperial attendant, the demonic cultivators would no longer dare to bother her. However, soon after leaving Grandma Long, a demonic cultivator suddenly appeared before her, its horrifying appearance causing her to scream in fright. Once she had calmed down, she used her new status to demand the demonic cultivator to stay away from her.
Seeing Yun Chao Yan talking to herself, the curious Xie Gui Chen approached and asked what had happened. Concerned about frightening him, Yun Chao Yan lied, claiming she had encountered some trouble that only Ren Shi Que could protect her from, which was why she had moved into the Imperial Censorate.
Xie Gui Chen's doubts were resolved by Yun Chao Yan's words. Spotting some flower hairpins nearby, he bought one for her. Little Gui Gui then relayed this information to Ren Shi Que, who felt uneasy upon hearing it. When Yun Chao Yan later came to see him, Ren Shi Que assigned her a new task - to clean the weapons storage.
Gui Gui brought Yun Chao Yan to the armory, as there had been no war in a long time, and the armory was in disarray, with many abandoned weapons and covered in dust. Gui Gui felt that it was not quite appropriate for Ren Shi Que to have Yun Chao Yan do this task, but Ren Shi Que did not think much of it.
Gu Qing came to Xie Gui Chen with an invitation, asking him to go see the lanterns, but Xie Gui Chen took the invitation without agreeing to go with her. Yun Chao Yan was busy working in the armory when Xie Gui Chen came to find her, but Yun Chao Yan was not in the mood to see the lanterns. The appearance of the Demon Cultivator earlier had frightened her, but she knew the Demon Cultivator must have come to her for a reason, so she decided to go see what problem the Demon Cultivator was facing.
When the Demon Cultivator left, Yun Chao Yan found a hairpin with the character "Qi" written on it where he had been. Since there was only one prominent Qi family in Qingzhou City, Yun Chao Yan asked Ren Shi Que to accompany her to the Qi estate, so as not to alarm the Demon Cultivator.
At the Qi estate, they found the portrait of Lady Qi in the living room. Master Qi told Ren Shi Que that he and his wife had a deep love, and after her passing, he had kept this shrine to her. When Yun Chao Yan took out the hairpin, she noticed a lady's handkerchief on Master Qi's waist and did not give him the hairpin.
After Ren Shi Que and Yun Chao Yan left, Master Qi went to the back hall, where the maid Rou'er embraced his waist and asked when he would give her a proper status. Master Qi smiled and said he was doing all this for the sake of the jewelry shop's business. It was then that he learned from Rou'er that the hairpin Yun Chao Yan had brought was indeed Lady Qi's, which Rou'er had misplaced a few days prior.
