Episode 3 recap: Ren Shi Que is the Moon Goddess.
The city of Qingzhou has not seen the moon for ten years. Yun Chao Yan believes that the sudden appearance of moonlight is her doing, but Ren Shi Que believes that Yun Chao Yan is just a servant in Yixiang, and the appearance of the moonlight has nothing to do with her. Yun Chao Yan wants to stay by Ren Shi Que's side in exchange for seeing the red-robed woman by his side. Ren Shi Que asks about the woman's appearance, and Yun Chao Yan's description shockingly reveals that she is Ren Shi Que's mother, Kui Ji. No wonder other immortals would flee at the sight of him, but the red-robed woman is not afraid.
Ren Shi Que, thinking about his mother's actions, tells Yun Chao Yan not to stir up trouble and not to bother him again, then leaves the Yixiang. Little Guigui sees the full moon return to the mortal world, and believes it is a manifestation of Lin Nian.
Xie Chengui sees Ren Shi Que coming to visit Yun Chao Yan and suspects their relationship is deeper than it seems. The citizens of Qingzhou are overjoyed to see the long-missed moonlight and set off fireworks to celebrate. The lord of Qingzhou, Gu Lang, seeks out Ren Shi Que to discuss the city's beauty pageant, and upon learning of Ren Shi Que's closeness with Yun Chao Yan, advises him to stay away from her, believing her to be an ill omen.
At night, Ren Shi Que lies in bed, puzzled as to why his mother is still following him, since he no longer has what she wants. Gu Qing hopes to win the beauty pageant, and while traveling to the hot springs outside the city, her carriage causes a commotion, scaring the citizens, who she believes are showing her great respect.
In the Chouxiu Garden, a pair of sisters have been selected, with the younger sister, Wen Zixe, being lively and energetic, while the elder sister, Wen Zimuo, is serene and graceful. The two go to Jing'an Hall to pray, but the younger sister's basket is left behind, and when she goes to retrieve it, she disappears without a trace.
Xiao Gui Gui reported this matter to Ren Shi Que, and found that the spirit lamp was acting strangely, feeling that it must be the work of the demonic immortal. Xiao Gui Gui hopes that Ren Shi Que can find Miss Zi Xi as soon as possible.
If she is not found within three days, the Wen family will face great disaster. Ren Shi Que instructs his deputy Xie Gui Chen to investigate the case and can recruit additional help. Yun Chao Yan applies for a position at the Imperial Censor's Office but is rejected by Ren Shi Que. As Ren Shi Que and Xiao Gui Gui walk down the street, they hear people all over discussing Miss Wen Zi Xi's disappearance - some say the elder sister hid her away out of jealousy, fearing her sister would compete for the emperor's favor in the palace, while others say Ren Shi Que offended the Moon Goddess, who then sent a powerful immortal to punish him, leading to Miss Wen's encounter.
Hearing these rumors angers Ren Shi Que, who uses magic to swell the gossipers' mouths shut, thinking he has covered his tracks. However, Yun Chao Yan witnesses this and threatens to expose Ren Shi Que's use of magic if he does not allow her to assist in the investigation of Miss Wen's disappearance. Xiao Gui Gui urges Ren Shi Que to keep Yun Chao Yan, as she can see demonic immortals and may help resolve his issues with his mother. But Ren Shi Que fears learning the truth will only cause him more pain.
It is revealed that Xiao Gui Gui is a thousand-year-old osmanthus tree from the moon, sent to serve the Moon Goddess Ren Shi Que. Ren Shi Que is troubled by the past incident with Yu Tu, but Xiao Gui Gui counsels him not to worry, as Yu Tu has been reincarnated as Gu Lang who comes to the Imperial Censor's Office daily. Gu Lang again visits Ren Shi Que, asking for help with a case at the Storage House, but Ren Shi Que ignores him.
Guided by the Dragon Priestess, Yun Chao Yan decides to help Ren Shi Que solve the case, believing that if she can assist in cracking the Storage House case, Ren Shi Que may allow her to remain at the Imperial Censor's Office. She rushes to the crime scene at Jing'an Hall to investigate on her own.
