Episode 9 recap: White Jiang searched the Ghost Market.
Yan Nanxing arrived at the capital city and was staying at an inn. He asked the waiter for information, and was told that to gather intelligence, he should go to the Ghost Market and find Cao Zhang Gui, the pawnshop owner. When Yan Nanxing went to the Ghost Market, he found it to be very lively, with many people doing business and singing and dancing.
White Jiang had also come to the Ghost Market to gather information about the Gui Cao herb. Wearing a veil, Jiang Suoluo quietly followed behind White Jiang. White Jiang had sent someone to discreetly follow the people on the street, and his subordinates were waiting there.
Yan Nanxing saw a stall selling flatbread, and wanted to buy one, but was shocked to find it cost 100 coins. Though he thought it was too expensive, there were many henchmen around, so he had to buy it. Yan Nanxing searched for a long time but couldn't find the pawnshop, so he asked the stall owner. The stall owner said the only pawnshop in the Ghost Market was right across from them, and took 10 coins from Yan Nanxing.
At the pawnshop, Cao Zhang Gui mistook Yan Nanxing's casual remark as a code, and talked to him about it at length. Realizing his mistake, Cao Zhang Gui tried to have Yan Nanxing escorted out. Yan Nanxing refused to leave, saying he hadn't gathered the information he needed yet. Cao Zhang Gui had the waiter Liu Ruoqian take Yan Nanxing out, and Liu Ruoqian bought him some flatbread. Appreciative, Yan Nanxing gave Liu Ruoqian his own flatbread.
The person White Jiang had sent to follow the contact had been killed. White Jiang had him properly buried and provided compensation for his family. White Jiang then caught up to and apprehended the contact, taking the coded token he was carrying.
However, the man refused to hand over the token to White Jiang, and instead swallowed it, dying immediately. White Jiang had the man's body cut open to retrieve the token.
In the Ghost Market, Yan Nanxing encountered a Persian fortune teller and asked her when he could find the person he was looking for. The fortune teller told him he just needed to clarify something. Yan Nanxing said he had already been married once before.
The fortune teller said his previous attempt at clarification was not sincere. When she needed to use the restroom, she had Yan Nanxing watch her stall. Jiang Suoluo happened to come get her fortune told, and Yan Nanxing suggested she also try to clarify something.
White Jiang brought people to surround the Ghost Market, intending to search everyone there for the other token. Cao Zhang Gui and his men tried to block White Jiang, saying the Ghost Market had its own rules that White Jiang couldn't just ignore. Unexpectedly, Shangbie Li also arrived with people to intervene, saying this was not something White Jiang should be involved in. The two sides began arguing.
Jiang Suoluo suggested they each take a step back, as the Ghost Market would be closing in an hour. She proposed letting White Jiang search, and if he found something, so be it, but if not, he would have to compensate the merchants.
White Jiang had his men search, and Yan Nanxing quickly hid. White Jiang asked Jiang Suoluo for help, as there were many women he couldn't have his men search. Jiang Suoluo made White Jiang beg her for help, which he did, and she agreed. When Jiang Suoluo searched and found Yan Nanxing, White Jiang watched but did not recognize him.
