Episode 4 recap: The general was injured.
One of General Jiang Xin Bai's subordinates learned that Jiang Xin Bai had gotten drunk, and he also felt distressed, thinking that if something happened to Jiang Xin Bai, he wouldn't know how to explain it to Wang Nv. Jiang Xin Bai felt that it was no big deal, since he had come out to investigate the case, it was different from before. Jiang Xin Bai asked his subordinate what he had found out, and the subordinate took out a diagram, indicating that there were three major families in River Barbarian - Tu Men, Gong Ye, and Mo Qi.
These three major families relied on each other, with Tu Men being the county magistrate, Gong Ye being the county defender, and Mo Qi being very mysterious, as no one had seen their family head. Jiang Xin Bai felt that the cuckoo flower business had started to emerge in the past decade or so, and naturally, such a business would not stand out.
Jiang Xin Bai's subordinate investigated the businesses of the Mo Qi family and found that they had pawnshops, inns, and many other businesses. Jiang Xin Bai remembered the second piece of intelligence that Yan Nan Xing had previously shared with him - Yan Nan Xing's mother had entered the study of the Southern General, and there was something suspicious about the study, likely a secret room, but they didn't know how to get in.
Jiang Xin Bai returned to the General's mansion, where the General and his wife were arguing. The General wanted to send his wife back to her family, but she refused. Yan Nan Xing made a nourishing soup for the General's wife and left a bowl for Jiang Xin Bai as well. When the General's wife came, Jiang Xin Bai said he wanted to take Yan Nan Xing out for a walk, and the General's wife agreed.
Jiang Xin Bai took Yan Nan Xing to the boat he had rented, saying he hadn't had a chance to properly look around before. Yan Nan Xing asked when he had been there, and he quickly said it was just a passing by before. Jiang Xin Bai wanted to discuss a partnership with Yan Nan Xing, where they would protect each other, and Jiang Xin Bai would go into the General's study first to investigate, then let Yan Nan Xing go in.
Yan Nan Xing asked Jiang Xin Bai if it was because a family member had been harmed by the cuckoo flower, but Jiang Xin Bai didn't say anything. The boat owner came and said that although Jiang Xin Bai had only rented the boat, he didn't want the owner's daughters, so he was sending two new girls over. The two girls started to get handsy with Jiang Xin Bai, and Yan Nan Xing came out, saying she was Jiang Xin Bai's wife, and told them to leave, which they did.
Jiang Xinbai kept General Yan Nanxing occupied for an hour. Yan Nanxing found an opportunity to add a drug to the general's hangover soup. When the general came to find his wife, he definitely wouldn't have a chance to go to the study.
Jiang Xinbai took the chance to go to the general's study. He found name plates and a room full of money. Someone outside saw Jiang Xinbai, so he quickly left with Yan Nanxing. Jiang Xinbai said they shouldn't go in, as it was just full of money, not what Yan Nanxing was looking for. But Yan Nanxing was determined to go in and search himself.
Yan Nanxing had heard the general's manor had an antidote, so that's why she wanted to come investigate. Jiang Xinbai said something would happen today, and told Yan Nanxing to leave tonight, but she refused. So Jiang Xinbai had to keep Yan Nanxing in the room.
Jiang Xinbai got into a fight outside with Lieutenant Li's men, and brought Lieutenant Li back. Li said he saw Jiang Xinbai go into the study, so he tried to attack him. Li found an opportunity to try to assassinate the general. The general's wife tried to shield the general, but he pushed her away and got injured himself.
Yan Nanxing discovered the knife was poisoned, and wanted to use some antidote plants to help the general, but he refused to take it. So Yan Nanxing used her own toxic blood to force the poison out of the general, as she had taken many medicines since childhood. She also needed to use a man's blood as a catalyst, so Jiang Xinbai let her take some of his blood to help the general.
Yan Nanxing bandaged Jiang Xinbai's wound and asked why he did this. Jiang Xinbai said he had an important mission, and if the general died, his mission wouldn't be complete. Yan Nanxing talked about how her mother used to try to save many people, but couldn't save them all. Yan Nanxing didn't want that burden, so she only treated minor illnesses.
