Episode 8 recap: Yan Nanxing went to the capital city.
The next day, the leader of the Gold Guard, Shang Bieling, received the news and rushed to the Bureau of the Chief Capturer, causing a commotion, saying he wanted to take that little thief away. Jiang Xinbai and Shang Bieling got into an argument, and Shang Bieling asked Jiang Xinbai where he had been these days, saying he was also concerned about Jiang Xinbai and hoped he wouldn't anger the Emperor.
Jiang Xinbai was not worried, stating that he was helping the Emperor and naturally had the Emperor's permission, so Shang Bieling didn't need to worry. She wanted to go to the capital to find the young man, no matter what condition he was in, and help him. Yan Nanxing had drawn the different appearances she took on after her transformation - sometimes an old man, sometimes a young boy - but couldn't figure out any pattern or what her true form was.
Jiang Xinbai's subordinate tried to disguise himself, but Jiang Xinbai still recognized him. Jiang Xinbai was surprised his subordinate didn't think the incense he had used would hide his identity, but Jiang Xinbai could tell from his hands and his stiff fan movements that he was not a true dandy. The subordinate conceded defeat. Jiang Xinbai then went to look at some pigeons, and his subordinates were surprised he could recognize the pigeons when he couldn't even recognize people in disguise.
Jiang Xinbai said that while people can have many different faces, pigeons do not change. His subordinate agreed, and said the only true self Jiang Xinbai recognized was Yan Nanxing's.
Jiang Xinbai's subordinate found out that the goods had been taken to the Ghost Market, and that the woman they had previously released had also been found there. When Jiang Xinbai went to investigate, he found that the woman had been killed by Shang Bieling, who claimed she had kidnapped someone and he had dealt with her.
Jiang Xinbai then went to celebrate his grandfather's birthday. His sister Jiang Sulv also came, but Jiang Xinbai did not recognize her at first, much to her displeasure. Jiang Xinbai said he had been preoccupied and didn't see her. Jiang Sulv asked if Jiang Xinbai looked down on her as his inferior sister, but Jiang Xinbai said they were siblings from the same mother. Jiang Xinbai's grandfather was very happy to see Jiang Sulv, but paid little attention to Jiang Xinbai, with Jiang Xinbai's mother pulling him aside.
The grandfather asked why Jiang Sulv's father had not come, and she explained he felt it was inconvenient, but the grandfather said there should be no inconvenience for his grandchild's wedding. Jiang Sulv then mentioned that she had become a Sacrificial Libationer, and everyone congratulated her.
Shang Bieling also arrived and got into an argument with Jiang Xinbai. Jiang Xinbai then claimed they had some matters to attend to that evening and needed to borrow some manpower, allowing him to quickly pull Shang Bieling away before he could say anything further.
