Episode 9 recap: Wen Ya helped Yu Jian deliver a birthday cake to Xia Guo.
Yu Jian was holding the cake, preparing to go to Shanghai to celebrate Xia Guo's birthday. He happened to meet Wen Ya at the train station. Wen Ya was going to Shanghai to visit an exhibition, and coincidentally, they were on the same train. Unfortunately, Yu Jian received a phone call from the police station, informing him that his mother had fainted due to being cheated. Yu Jian couldn't go to Shanghai, so Wen Ya thought since it's Xia Guo's birthday and Yu Jian couldn't make it, she would take the cake and deliver it to Xia Guo. Yu Jian was very grateful to Wen Ya.
After arriving at the police station and learning about the situation, Yu Jian found out that his mother had been scammed out of 400,000 yuan. Although the police assured him that they would try their best to recover the money, the hope was not high. When Xia Guo saw the cake and Wen Ya in Shanghai, she was actually not happy. She had already seen the photos of Wen Ya and Yu Jian, and now on her birthday, it turned out that Wen Ya was delivering the cake instead of Yu Jian. Xia Guo couldn't find happiness in that.
Not only was Yu Jian's mother cheated, but she also introduced this project to her friends, so her friends were also scammed. Now, there is less than 10,000 yuan left in Yu Jian's family savings. Yu Jian planned to use the remaining savings to repay his mother's friends.
At night, Yu Jian had a video call with Xia Guo, but Xia Guo was still unhappy. They had an argument because Xia Guo was angry that Yu Jian and Wen Ya were getting too close. Xia Guo got angry and hung up the phone, and Yu Jian, in anger, threw his phone.
When Yu Jian's father heard the noise from the bedroom, he went to check the situation. He told his son that he should go to Shanghai to see Xia Guo because some people become strangers if they don't see each other. After the argument, Xia Guo went out to drink alone and got drunk. Luckily, she contacted Mr. Xue and thanked him for sending her a red envelope and wishing her a happy birthday. The person who made the drinks quickly took the phone and asked the other person to come and pick up the intoxicated Xia Guo. Xia Guo was surprised to see Mr. Xue by her side when she woke up from her hangover.
Mr. Xue was relieved to see her sober but hoped that Xia Guo could think about what else she had besides love.
Xia Guo seems to have never really thought about whether she should live her life for herself, apart from Yu Jian and love. So she went to the mall and indulged in some self-consumption, but when she returned home, she saw Yu Jian standing at the door. When Yu Jian hugged her, she was still in a daze.
Back at home, Xia Guo cooked a meal for Yu Jian but received a call from Mr. Xue. So she was busy changing plans before dinner. Yu Jian wanted Xia Guo to eat first, but Xia Guo told him that the workers here don't have weekends off. Xia Guo also noticed that Yu Jian had switched back to his old phone. Yu Jian explained that he accidentally dropped the new one yesterday, and Xia Guo didn't ask any further.
Yu Jian took the initiative to explain the situation between him and Wen Ya, but they ended up arguing again. Xia Guo brought up past issues, feeling that Yu Jian gave up on her for the sake of his family. Yu Jian also felt that Xia Guo had changed. She not only didn't care about her own family but also worked in Shanghai just to buy more shoes and clothes.
Xia Guo was very disappointed. She didn't expect Yu Jian to see her in that light. Yu Jian wanted Xia Guo to return to Leshan because he needed her by his side. However, Xia Guo felt that Yu Jian didn't necessarily need her specifically; he just needed someone to accompany him, and that person could be anyone.
In a fit of anger, Yu Jian even suggested breaking up and then left. Xia Guo ran after him but was stopped by Mr. Xue. Mr. Xue looked at Xia Guo and told her that the person who brings up the breakup first won't feel as hurt. Xia Guo couldn't do it. She knew that thinking about Yu Jian would only make her sad and heartbroken. Mr. Xue watched Xia Guo cry and held her in his arms.
Xia Guo went back to Leshan to find Yu Jian but witnessed him holding hands with Wen Ya. Yu Jian uttered the words "break up," and Xia Guo felt deeply disappointed and heartbroken.
