Episode 17 recap: The Grudge of Killing One's Mother.
Ling Zhi had been by Mu Xuan Jue's side the entire time, and when Mu Xuan Jue woke up, he saw Ling Zhi sleeping by his window. Mu Xuan Jue felt very heartbroken seeing Ling Zhi in this state, and gently brushed Ling Zhi's hair. He never imagined that Ling Zhi would be willing to expose her identity just to save him.
Recalling their final meeting when Mu Xuan Jue had said he wanted to marry Ling Zhi, the two had been deeply in love back then. Mu Xuan Jue secretly swore that he would never let Ling Zhi down in the future. The Empress Dowager also learned that someone had saved Mu Xuan Jue, when the palace physicians were unable to do so. Although she did not know who it was, the Empress Dowager stated that she would thoroughly investigate the matter.
After Mu Xuan Jue went out, he inquired with his subordinates whether anyone had come the previous night. The subordinate said only the Empress Dowager's people had come that morning, and he also knew that it was Ling Zhi who had saved Mu Xuan Jue, but he would not tell anyone this secret.
When Ling Zhi woke up, she found that Mu Xuan Jue had already left. She was still wondering why she had acted so impulsively last night, exposing her identity to treat Mu Xuan Jue. Just as Ling Zhi was about to leave the room, she heard Mu Xuan Jue telling his subordinate that Ling Zhi still had her uses, and that she was the one who had killed Mu Xuan Jue's mother, seeking revenge all this time. Hearing the noise, Mu Xuan Jue hurried back to the room to explain to Ling Zhi. Ling Zhi couldn't remember ever killing Mu Xuan Jue's mother, and when Mu Xuan Jue confirmed it, Ling Zhi refused to let Mu Xuan Jue come near her.
Mu Xuan Jue said he had figured out Ling Zhi's identity early on, and initially wanted to take revenge. Ling Zhi was deeply agitated, and told Mu Xuan Jue to take his revenge, but Mu Xuan Jue ultimately could not bring himself to do it.
Ling Zhi did not know why she had killed Mu Xuan Jue's mother. As she walked, tears she had held back for a hundred years began to fall.
The Empress Dowager summoned her. Huan Fei's maid found Mu Xuan Jue and said she had a secret to exchange for Huan Fei's safety. She knew the true circumstances of Mu Xuan Jue's mother's death. But before she could say anything, Mu Xuan Jue was called away by the Empress Dowager.
The Empress Dowager questioned Ling Zhi about her exceptional medical skills, to which Ling Zhi could only stammer. Mu Xuan Jue stepped in to shield Ling Zhi. In fact, Mu Xuan Jue had already learned from the maid that his mother's murder was actually the Empress Dowager's doing, and that Ling Zhi was a shape-shifting member of the Illusion Tribe, so everything he had seen was false.
Mu Xuan Jue could not openly defy the Empress Dowager right now, as he did not have enough power. But one day, he would surely avenge his mother. Ling Zhi still did not know the truth. Mu Xuan Jue asked her to leave with him, as he had something he needed to tell her.
