Episode 14 recap: Grandma Lin's terminal illness is thought-provoking.
When Chen Mai Dong's ex-girlfriend suddenly returned to Nanping Town, Zhuang Jie heard Grandma Chen describe her in just three words: a harmful person. However, Chen Mai Dong secretly met his ex-girlfriend without informing Zhuang Jie, which made Zhuang Jie very angry and reminded him of his initial promise to be honest and open.
Although Zhuang Jie despised melodramatic scenes of catching cheaters, she was also an ordinary person who couldn't control her impulses and ended up going to the place where Chen Mai Dong and his ex-girlfriend were meeting. Grandma Chen found out about Grandma Lin's brain tumor through Wu Xue Hua and couldn't accept it, so she ran away from home. Everyone searched for her overnight and eventually found Grandma Chen by the river.
After this incident, Liao Tao told Zhuang Jie that if she insisted on being with Chen Mai Dong, such things would happen more frequently in the future. With her own health condition and Chen Mai Dong's circumstances, they would both be burdens to each other. Song Yi couldn't deny that she liked Chen Mai Dong, but her intense and passionate feelings had become a burden for him.
In Chen Mai Dong's eyes, Song Yi was just a sister of a good friend, nothing more. They even avoided each other for a while. Until one day, Song Yi was surrounded by troublemakers off-campus. She could have left, but she had the idea of letting Chen Mai Dong come to her rescue like a hero.
However, Chen Mai Dong rejected the call and wanted Song Yi to tell her to give up early. Unfortunately, this miscommunication resulted in Song Yi losing her life. After her brother's death, Song Yi felt deep remorse and couldn't face Chen Mai Dong. But Chen Mai Dong also felt guilty and eventually took over the responsibility of protecting and taking care of Song Yi. They became the people who understood each other the most.
During that time, Chen Mai Dong fulfilled all of Song Yi's requests and conditions. Although she was well aware that Chen Mai Dong intentionally blurred the boundaries between pity and affection, she still held onto a glimmer of hope, thinking that her liking for him would last until the end. However, things didn't go as planned, and during their seven years of being together, pain and exhaustion occupied a significant portion.
So later on, Song Yi was the first to suggest a breakup because she realized, after meeting her current husband, that she was also a person who could smile and that liking someone doesn't necessarily mean love. Song Yi knew that Chen Mai Dong loved Zhuang Jie, so she hoped that Zhuang Jie would treat him well and let him find happiness.
However, the truth is that Zhuang Jie is best at simplifying things. Whenever she encounters something she can't understand or a complex situation that she currently lacks the ability to solve, she simply sets it aside and follows the philosophy of "cross the bridge when you come to it." It's not until this moment that Zhuang Jie sees Song Yi and suddenly realizes how cruel she has been.
That night, Chen Mai Dong returned home exhausted after two nights of busyness, which took a toll on his health. Grandma Chen, concerned for him, inquired about his true thoughts. Chen Mai Dong honestly confessed that he stayed in Nanping Town not only for her and his master but also for his commitments to others. Grandma Chen felt sorry for him and advised him to be a bit more selfish.
The next day, Zhuang Jie came to visit the sick Chen Mai Dong and unexpectedly posed a question, curious about whether he would resent her for leaving Nanping Town and going to Shanghai. Zhuang Jie expressed her desire to prove her worth and stated that she had to make choices. She didn't want to compromise or feel regretful years after marrying Chen Mai Dong. She didn't want to rely on imagination to speculate about another possibility in her life, completely losing herself and causing cracks in their marriage, leading to hostility between her and Chen Mai Dong.
Liao Tao went to the nearby town to deliver takeout and left some money for Zhuang Yan before leaving. When Zhuang Yan heard that her elder sister was in a relationship with Chen Mai Dong, she felt happy. Grandma Chen unexpectedly learned that Grandma Lin had terminal brain cancer and couldn't accept it. Lost and distraught, she walked on the road and was spotted by Liao Tao, who quickly called Chen Mai Dong.
Coincidentally, Chen Mai Dong was taking a shower and didn't hear the phone ringing. Later, Wu Xue Hua mobilized everyone to help find Grandma Chen. Despite Zhuang Jie's leg pain, she managed to find her by the river and promptly notified Chen Mai Dong.

After comforting his grandmother, Chen Mai Dong had a video call with Zhuang Jie, and both of them tacitly avoided discussing the future. They made plans to go out and watch a movie together. Since the movie had already started, Zhuang Jie and Chen Mai Dong lost the desire to go in and instead sat outside the cinema, chatting and cuddling, enjoying the cozy night view.
