Plot Synopsis
"GrowingPains of Swordsmen" is an adaptation of Gu Long's novel of the same name. It tells the story of the children of the leaders of the "Hundred Tongs Society" - Yan Qi, Wang Dong, and Lin TaiPing - who meet Guo Da Lu on their journey to become successors to the sect. They grow together in the martial world and face various challenges.
Fu Gui Manor inPing An Town serves as the headquarters of theprominent sect "Hundred Tongs Society." The three elder leaders, who desire retirement, interrupt the financial support of their children, Lin TaiPing, Wang Dong, and Yan Qi, and create difficulties to accelerate their growth aspotential successors. Unexpectedly, a commoner martial hero named Guo Da Lu appears and disrupts theirplans. He becomes friends with the three young heroes, and together they establish a martial arts school, a newspaper, a theater troupe, and a detective agency. However, their endeavors not only lead to increasingpoverty but also attract rival factions.
Meanwhile, the four young heroes face internal unity challenges, hostile forces, and romantic entanglements. Gradually, they developsurvival skills, grow fond of each other, and experience blossoming romances. When the three elder leaders decide topass on theirpositions to the young heroes, the latter refuse. They believe that those who bring joy to themselves and others in ordinary life are also heroes.

I binge-watched the first 6 episodes in one go. It's Director Shang's style, with distinct character personalities, a well-paced plot, and a humorous touch.
It didn't disappoint my long-awaited expectations. It's a great drama to enjoy while having a meal. I don't understand why some nitpickers always compare adaptations to the original works.
If they love the original so much, why not just read the book and indulge in their own imagination? There's no need to go around leaving random comments and pretending to be knowledgeable.
Respecting the original work also means respecting creative adaptations. Culture is not just about nostalgia; it's about innovative continuity. As long as the audience loves and enjoys watching it, and gains satisfaction from this drama, that's all that matters.
The scene where Guo Da Lu intercepted the dart was quite interesting. He saved the head of the dart bureau and was invited to join as a dart bearer. However, on the way, they encountered bandits.
The bandits couldn't defeat Guo Da Lu, so they resorted to acting pitiful. Guo Da Lu, being softhearted, ended up sharing a box of silver he was escorting with the bandits. The head of the dart bureau cried and begged Guo Da Lu, saying, "I'll stay with the silver, you can go." As a result, Guo Da Lu was dismissed from his position.
The story of Feng Qi Wu is quite interesting, involving a renowned river pirate and a courtesan. If it ends up being bittersweet (BE), it means the two of them will have no further connection. After parting ways, they never see each other again, and the girl marries someone else, leading a plain and ordinary life.
Who would have thought that her current husband is actually the dream lover from back then? In order to be with the girl he loves, he chose to live a simple life and settled down, becoming the honest person that everyone now takes advantage of. The love the man has for the woman is sweeter than the artificial sweetness of industrial sugar, and it feels more realistic.
In fact, the legendary thief, like Lao Bai and Feng Qi Wu, is mostly just a subject of rumors in the martial arts world. It sounds cool, but it's also a kind of idol packaging.
